Nippon Steel

The most proven waste gasification technology available
Full Review:
This report is a completely revised and updated review of the Nippon Steel gasification process. Since publishing our earlier review, Juniper has appraised a number of reference sites in Japan. We have also obtained additional information about the company's plans for this process outside Japan.
Nippon Steel is one of the few companies that have successfully commercialised a high temperature gasification technology for the processing of municipal solid waste (MSW): the DMS process. This process has more reference plants operating than any other comparable process and together, these facilities have accumulated more than 100 years of commercial experience. In our view, this is the most proven waste gasification technology; yet it is not widely known outside Japan. This review provides invaluable information for those not yet familiar with the technology and assesses its relevance to applications outside Japan.
What's in the review:
This is the most comprehensive review available of this process in the public domain. It analyses the current status of the process, and examines the issues which would be of most interest to potential customers. It includes the following:
- Current commercial status
- Technical performance of the process, including operational data from three sites
- Advantages and disadvantages of the process
- Full reference list giving details of existing facilities and announced projects
- Analysis of the environmental performance of this technology
- Photos of reference plants
Examples of specific potential issues identified and discussed within the report include:
- Should the process be considered by municipalities outside Japan?
- How marketable are the recycled products that this process produces?
- Is maximising the recyclability of the solid residues at the expense of net electricity production a more sustainable approach?
- What are the economics of the process?
